Turn and Face the Strange! Changes!

I am very much aware that we plan for the future that we anticipate, but that the life we live is much more fluid than our plans can accommodate.  A good plan is a common basis for change.  It allows for coordinated responses to the unexpected and enables anticipation of what other changes might present themselves.  As you may have surmised, our plans have changed.

The Baja Ha-Ha is off the table.  A family issue has required that we remain at least through November.  It was our plan to leave from Cabo San Lucas and sail to Hawaii.  We still intend to sail to Hawaii, but we will be departing in April 2025 from Channel Islands Harbor and to make for Hilo.  While we are disappointed, we also see that this affords us six to seven months of shakedown and practice with our new acquisitions for S/V Tiburón

What has been updated?  We have a list!

  • A new set of sails, including an Ayso

  • A Hydrovane Self Sterring System

  • Iridium GO! Offshore internet and communications, inclusive of real time tracking

  • Rainman Watermaker

  • Upgraded Solar Panels and Canvass

  • EPIRB, Life Raft, and and Go Pack

  • Drogue

  • Updated Fridge and Freezer

  • Replacement of Diesel Engine Cooling system

  • Repairs to Grey Water system

The Hydrovane and Iridium GO! have the steepest learning curves.  They will require practice.  We both feel that we must develop competency with these tools before we entrust ourselves to their care.  I may be posting “How NOT to do this” videos with the wind steering system.  We are also planning to do extending near shore sailing – one to three weeks at a time – which will serve to test our endurance, schedules, practice in real conditions while being close enough to shore to pull into port if necessary.

Our plan is a version of the original sail plan that we posted some time ago.  We will sail from Channel Islands to Hilo, HI.  We anticipate spending two to three months cruising in Hawaii.  From Hawaii, we will make for the Pacific Northwest.  We will plan on spending a month or so cruising the San Juans and seeing friends and family that reside in Washington and Oregon.  Then we will make for our homeport, where we will do maintenance on Tiburón and prepare for the next event.  We are considering joining The Pacific Puddle Jump in 2026 and spending time cruising in the South Pacific.

Ah, but the best laid plans…

I will be updating the webpage to include lists of our favorite vendors and service providers.  We receive no consideration from any of these.  I will give you an honest impression of the people that we’ve worked with on Tiburón.  We will also be posting our real time tracking map.  Float plans will be posted online, as well.

More later!
